Cancelling a task
Tasks move through these states: applied → accepted (card authorised) → completed (card charged). What you can do at each step:
- Before a helper is accepted
- Either side can withdraw freely. Your card has not been touched.
- Helper accepted, card authorised, work not started
- Either party can cancel. The Stripe authorisation is cancelled and the hold is released. No charge ever appears.
- Helper accepted, work in progress
- You can still cancel — the hold is released — but please message the helper first. Repeated last-minute cancellations may affect your account standing.
- Task completed (QR scanned)
- No self-serve cancellation. If the work is unacceptable, open a dispute within 7 days.
Cancelling a borrow rental
Rentals have two separate holds (rent and deposit) and a handoff step:
- Request not yet accepted by the lender
- Borrower can withdraw, lender can reject. Both holds are released.
- Accepted, before handoff
- Either side can cancel. Both rent and deposit holds are released. No charge appears.
- After handoff (rental period started)
- The rental contract is in effect. Returning early may earn you a pro-rated refund (see Refunds → Borrow rentals). Deposit outcome is decided at return based on damage/late.
- Lender cancels their listing with active requests
- All pending requests on that listing are cancelled and the holds are released. Lenders should avoid this — repeated cancellations may affect their account standing.
Auto-expire timers
To protect both sides, our system automatically cancels stuck bookings:
- 24 hours — pending borrow requests with no lender response.
- 48 hours — accepted bookings where you abandoned the payment screen, or where one side confirmed handoff but the other ghosted.
- 48 hours after a helper accepts — if no QR scan happens, our system either auto-captures (the work was likely done) or expires the hold, depending on the booking type.
- 7 days — Stripe's maximum hold window. Borrow rentals are capped at 7 days for this reason. We send a reminder 24 hours before the hold expires.
Right of withdrawal
EU consumers have a 14-day right of withdrawal under Directive 2011/83/EU. See the Refunds page for the full explanation including Article 16(a) — the exception that applies once the matching service has been fully performed.
Need to reverse a completed booking?
Once your card is charged you can no longer cancel — but you can open a dispute within 7 days (tasks) or 14 days (borrows) of the work being marked complete.
