How to Spot a Competent Helper in Minutes

A short checklist to identify reliable, skilled helpers before you accept a request.

You can usually tell within a couple of messages whether a helper is going to be reliable. Here's what I look for before I accept someone — it takes about thirty seconds, not a full interview.

Read the first message they send

Good helpers tell you how they'd approach the job and ask a sharp question or two — "Is there a lift, or is it stairs?" A one-line "I can help" with no detail usually means they skimmed the title and stopped. The application message is free-form on purpose: it's the first real sample of how someone communicates.

Read the reviews, not just the star count

Every task on HandIt ends with a review from both sides, so ratings are hard to fake. Three recent reviews that mention specifics — "showed up on time," "cleaned up after himself" — tell you more than one glowing five-star with no words attached. Look for the pattern, not the average.

Notice how they handle time

  • Confirms a specific window instead of a vague "sometime tomorrow"
  • Tells you early if something slips, rather than going quiet
  • Doesn't promise a two-hour job in thirty minutes

See whether they respect the scope

The best helpers do what you agreed and ask before adding anything that changes the price. Someone who starts "while I'm here"-ing you into a bigger job on the spot is usually the same person who surprises you at the end. Agree the scope in chat first — it's your record if anything is ever disputed.
